When a picnic by the river brings nature out to play

There's a Rainbow in my River
He Kōpere kei taku Awa

Dawn McMillan
Illustrated by Nikki Slade Robinson
Translated by Stephanie Huriana Fong

Discover what’s in the river with newest book in Dawn McMillan’s bilingual Nature Series

There’s a rainbow in my river.
He’s the colours of the sky.

He kōpere kei taku awa,
Nō te rangi ōna tae.

When Nan and her mokopuna go down to the river for a picnic, they see Rainbow Trout cruising the waters — and then the fun begins.

Soon Water Spider, Diving Beetle, Kōura, Tuna Kūwharuwharu and friends are there too, all leaping off the page — both in verse (in English and te reo Māori) and colourful pictures.

Celebrated author Dawn McMillan brings her brilliant imagination to the river environment, with art by internationally recognised illustrator Nikki Slade Robinson, and Māori text by translator and TV host Stephanie Huriana Fong.

At the back there are information pages to help kids learn more about the fascinating creatures that live in New Zealand rivers.

New children’s book empowers visually impaired character and celebrates diversity

Lucky Me

Lawrence Schimel
Illustrated by Juan Camilo Mayorga

Publishing for World Sight Day and Blind Low Vision Week, Lucky Me tells the story of a boy who feels very lucky to have a brother like Mateo — who is visually impaired.

Bruno thinks his friend Sanjay is lucky: he has a pet iguana and his own room. Mateo is lucky too: he has a dog who helps him get around and he can read with his fingers in the dark.

Bruno doesn’t have his own room and he doesn’t have a pet. But he soon realises that he’s very lucky too, for his own special reasons.

Lucky Me tells a thoughtful story about the different abilities and strengths that make us unique.

A disability means that Bruno’s brother does some things differently, but it does not hold him back. On the contrary – he can do amazing things that others can’t!

In the end, Bruno shows we all have something to feel lucky about.

Written by Lawrence Schimel, the award-winning author of Bedtime, Not Playtime! and Early One Morning, the story is beautifully illustrated by Juan Camilo Mayorga.

Lucky Me was first published by the outstanding independent publisher Rey Naranjo in Colombia.

Oratia is pleased to publish this English edition in association with Orca Books, Canada, as part of our Five Oceans collection, bringing important international books to Aotearoa.

MEDIA RELEASE
26 September 2018: For immediate release

The Scottish Granny Janice Clark has scored another New Zealand hit with her online reading of bestselling picture book I Need a New Bum!
The Brisbane-based Scottish gran has had 330,000 views and more than 6,500 shares on Facebook since posting a video on Saturday evening reading the book to grandson Archer — and sales are on a roll.

Video of the Scottish Granny reduced to gales of laughter has made this already the second-most popular post by the Scottish Granny, in the wake of another Kiwi children’s hit, The Wonky Donkey.
I Need a New Bum! is already a bestseller, having sold over 50,000 copies in New Zealand since publication in 2012. On Monday Whitcoulls again named it among its annual Kids’ Top 50.
Author Dawn McMillan has been dazzled by interest following the Scottish Granny’s reading, saying: “I’m just thrilled with the success of this book and reaching kids and adult readers around the world.”
Sales spikes are on the cards for the US edition (I Need a New Butt!), plus the Chinese — helped by illustrator Ross Kinnaird’s promotional visit to Beijing last week.
