Crowds thronging the pavilion, strong turnouts for author events, publishers tied up in meeting after meeting: the Taipei International Book Exhibition is proving a busy experience for the New Zealand contingent. 

The large Guest of Honour pavilion has been standing room for a number of cultural performances, with hundreds showing up for performances by Ngā Kete Tuku Iho's performance group and its wood carvers also drawing many onlookers.

New Zealand makes spectacular Taipei debut

New Zealand's landmark Guest of Honour participation at the Taipei International Book Exhibition is underway. 

Muriwai Ihakara, Creative New Zealand's Senior Manager Māori Engagement, blessed the national stand in the Taipei World Trade Center on Wednesday morning with a large delegation of New Zealand and Taiwanese publishers, authors, illustrators and officials in attendance. 

After the official opening, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou spent time on the New Zealand stand with his large entourage - taking time to peruse the book displays and the live exhibition of Māori carving by Ngā Kete Tuku Iho carvers Arekatera Maihi (pictured left) and James Teepa.

There's a buzz in the air at the World Trade Center exhibition hall in Taipei, as crews work to prepare stands and displays before tomorrow's official opening of the Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE).

New Zealand's Guest of Honour stand is taking shape - and how. The space for the busy seminar programme is framed by three giant, stylised tokotoko (orator's sticks) constructed in reinforced paper, around which publishers have now filled their shelves with a wide range of New Zealand books.

Dowling to speak at Frankfurt Academy programme in Taipei

Peter Dowling is among the line-up of international speakers for a 2-day training programme being held at the Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) this 10–11 February.

New Zealand is the Guest of Honour at the 2015 Exhibition, and the programme has been assisted by the Publishers Association of New Zealand.

Jointly organised by the Frankfurt Buchmesse’s Frankfurt Academy  and supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the ‘Expanding Business’ conference aims to equip publishing professionals with answers to questions about change in the industry and networking opportunities with international players. 

Peter will be joining colleagues from Taiwan and Europe to discuss ‘Growing opportunities for independent publishers’ in a morning session on 11 February.

“It’s an honour to represent the New Zealand publishing industry at the seminar, in the year that our country is TIBE’s Guest of Honour,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a stimulating exchange of views at Taipei.”

Hall 1 at the Taiwan World Trade Center

Our first time at the Taipei International Book Exhibition is proving busy and educational. The show spreads across two halls at the Taipei World Trade Center with a bustling mix of trade and public visitors. The majority of exhibitors are Taiwanese publishers and booksellers, with a healthy representation of Asian and world publishers. 

Oratia Media's books are alongside five fellow Kiwi publishers - Auckland University Press, David Ling Publishing, Gecko Press, Upstart Press and Wendy Pye - on the New Zealand stand. It's proving a productive fair that we're all hoping will lead to translations and sales for our authors and illustrators, especially as next year will be New Zealand's turn as Guest of Honour.

Libro goes to Taiwan

Libro International books will be on show at the Taipei International Book Exhibition next week, when Oratia Media takes its place on the New Zealand collective stand at Taiwan's leading book event. 

Supported by the Publishers Association of New Zealand and Creative New Zealand, the stand will allow us to showcase our authors to professional visitors as well as Taiwanese readers (the exhibition's first day on 5 February is for professional visitors, then it opens to the general public from 6 - 10 February). New Zealand is preparing to be Guest of Honour at the event in 2015.

In addition to publishers from Taiwan, I'll be meeting with colleagues from elsewhere in Asia, as well as further afield. Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand are the countries of focus at this year's exhibition - so we're looking to make inroads into these large and affluent book markets.
