Bullies and Warriors
Tim Tipene

Helping kids find a way through bullying
At a time when bullying is causing growing debate
and concern, a junior novel out on 16 July addresses
it head-on and helps kids to deal with the issue.

Tim Tipene has taken the unusual step of revising his
2006 novel Warrior Kids so as to focus on the bullying
issue, and has given it a new title - Bullies and Warriors.

The novel, aimed at 8–12 year-olds, tells the story of Sean, for whom going to school is a misery because of bully Mark Thomas. Then the students join Warrior Kids, a programme that teaches leadership and self-control. So begins a journey for Mark and Sean that has a predictable outcome for one boy and a surprise for the other.
Tim Tipene plays a part in the novel himself, as the leader of Warrior Kids. He is not only an award-winning children’s author, but works as a youth and self-defence counsellor.

The Story of Sir Peter Blake

The Story of Sir Peter Blake
Tessa Duder

The first book about Sir Peter Blake
for younger readers

Sir Peter Blake was a New Zealand hero – sailor, adventurer, leader and environmentalist. With the passing of over 10 years since his tragic death, the time is ripe for children and young adults to know more about his life and legacy.

In The Story of Sir Peter Blake, award-winning author Tessa Duder tells Sir Peter’s life story for young readers, revealing what made him an inspirational leader and sailing legend.

From his early years sailing on the Waitemata Harbour, the book traces Blake’s emergence as a leading ocean sailor – one who would go on to win the Whitbread Round-the-World trophy and the Trophée Jules Verne for the fastest voyage around the world. Then he led New Zealand to some of its greatest sporting achievements – winning and defending the America’s Cup – before devoting his last years to raising global awareness of environmental issues.

Superbly written, The Story of Sir Peter Blake is richly illustrated with photos from his life and features informative background to sailing skills, the America’s Cup and other topics. The book was commissioned by the Sir Peter Blake Trust, which works to inspire the next generation of leaders, adventurers and environmentalists.

Libro International celebrates Anzac Day and Italy Liberation Day in Auckland

Libro International commemorated Anzac Day this evening together with the Italy Star Association (servicemen who fought in Italy and their families) and the Dante Alighieri Society. The event, hosted by Italy Star NZ president Gary Russell at Kinder House in Parnell, was well attended. For the first time the Italian community was present also to celebrate Italy Liberation Day which, like Anzac Day, falls on 25 April.

Among those present were Italian Campaign veterans Les Andrews and John Cawte, and Italian Honorary Consul Mario Magaraggia. Alessandra Zecchini spoke about the book To the Gateways of Florence: New Zealand Forces in Tuscany, 1944, and thanked the Italy Star for hosting the event .

Woolly Wally returns

Woolly Wally

Dawn McMillan
Illustrated by Ross Kinnaird

Popular book returns...
Woolly Wally is back!

Wally is a magnificent ram who is immensely proud of his fine fleece, and the effect it has on the ewes around him. But pride always comes before a fall – or in Wally’s case, before the shearing shed.

Dawn McMillan’s hilarious rhyming tale of the leader of a flock who’s in for a nasty shock is memorably illustrated by Ross Kinnaird in a package that will delight kids in the 5 to 8 age group.

Woolly Wally was published in 2006 but has been out of print for some years. From today it’s available again in full colour, and will soon be available as an ebook.

Author Dawn McMillan welcomes the return of Woolly Wally: “It’s great to have Wally back – we’ve all missed him!”

Dawn and Ross are the well-known children’s book team who created the international bestseller Why Do Dogs Sniff Bottoms?; they are collaborating on a new book, I Need a New Bum, to be published by Libro International in September.
