RIP John Johnston
Photographer, artist and author John Johnston passed away last week at the age of 96.
John had a long and distinguished career as a photographer and artist - starting out as a street photographer in downtown Auckland using the first Leica camera, establishing Auckland's premiere photographic studio after the Second World War, later picking up paintbrushes to become a commercial artist, and at the end of his life still creating and experimenting with a digital camera and Photoshop.
John published two books: I Didn't Have a Choice (Reed, 2006), the illustrated account of his Second World War service in North Africa and Italy, and the privately published Notions (2011). His last work, 80 Years Behind the Lens: The life story of a professional New Zealand photographer, is now being prepared for publication by his long-term collaborator Martyn Thompson.
Loved by those who knew him, John was a true gentleman and a meticulous craftsman. Our thoughts are with his partner Susan, his friends and family. Rest in peace, John.

Oratia Media to publish New Zealand parliamentary guide
At the conclusion of a public request for
proposals and selection process, the Office of the Clerk of the House of
Representatives has appointed Oratia Media to publish the fourth edition of the
authoritative guide to the conduct of our Parliament – Parliamentary Practice in New Zealand.
West Auckland-based Oratia Media will publish
the book as a high-quality paperback and an ebook, with a provisional
publication date of August 2016.
Parliamentary Practice in New Zealand
provides a detailed description of New Zealand’s parliamentary practice. It is
an authoritative text for use by members of Parliament, public servants,
academics, parliamentary officers and other working professionals who have an
interest in Parliament, such as the legal profession.
David Wilson, Clerk of the House of
Representatives, commented: “We’re really excited to be working with Oratia to
produce a new edition of a much-used text. Producing an ebook will be a first
for our Parliament and will hopefully widen its readership even further.”
Peter Dowling, Managing Director of Oratia
Media, welcomed the agreement to publish Parliamentary
Practice in New Zealand. “We’ve brought together an experienced team in
Auckland, Wellington and Oamaru to edit and design this significant work, and
look forward to a close relationship with the Office of the Clerk of the House
of Representatives.”
Further information about the book will be
released closer to the publication date.

László Krasznahorkai wins Man Booker International Prize

Alessandra and I had the pleasure of meeting Lászlo at his home outside Budapest some years back. He's a kind and warm man. His books are dark yet funny, massively imaginative, and challenge the novelistic form - The Melancholoy of Resistance is a favourite.

Te Hokowhitu a Tu to be published ahead of Gallipoli Centenary
Te Hokowhitu a Tu
The Maori Pioneer Battalion in
the First World War
Christopher Pugsley
Main history of Maori and Pacific Island role in
the First World War makes welcome return
Maori soldiers signing up for the First World
War representing a formidable fighting force – Te Hokowhitu a Tu, or the
Seventy twice-told warriors of the war god.
Te Hokowhitu a Tu tells the story of the decisive
contribution that Maori and Pacific Islanders made on the front lines of
Gallipoli and the Western Front.
Richly illustrated with unique photos and
memorabilia, the book balances its account of military
exploits with a portrayal of daily life for Maori and Pacific Island soldiers.
To mark the Gallipoli centenary, this April
Libro International will re-publish Te
Hokowhitu a Tu with a smart new cover and the original text.
Christopher Pugsley’s contribution to military
history was recognised by his receipt of the New Zealand Order of Merit Award
in January. He retired in 2012 as Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military
Academy, Sandhurst, UK, and now works as a freelance historian from his home in
Waikanae. The author of numerous books including Gallipoli: The New Zealand Story, Christopher is the principal
historian for Te Papa’s Gallipoli project.
